Exhibition overview
Despite living in different centuries, Francisco Goya’s (1746-1828) and Federico Castellon’s (1914-1971) body of work often draws sharper relationships to one another than to their contemporaries in their attention to the darker and complex side of the human condition. This exhibition features two important print series produced by the artists from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ permanent collection: Castellon’s lithographs for Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death and Goya’s etchings from Los Disparates (or The Proverbs). Many artists have been drawn to the dark and the fantastic, but few have probed the human condition with the insight and truthfulness found in these images.
Organized by the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts, Kalamazoo, Michigan.
