Exhibition overview
Curated for this exhibition are pieces that form a visual chronicle of place, history, culture, and community. Many of the artworks unveil narratives about the local region as well as the featured artists. At certain intersections, the viewer will discover familiar landscapes and architecture – including swamps, rivers, deltas, fields, plantations, and farmhouses. Revealed at these crossroads are whispers of secrets, haunting folklore, and mythology unique to the Gulf Coast. Digging deeper, one might uncover fables and hints of Southern Gothic influences. This exhibition showcases only a small selection of the more than 700 artworks currently housed within the PMA’s permanent collection, but it highlights important, hidden stories found within artworks rarely seen… and some on view for the first time.
